Do THIS Before Going Through Security in Disney World

Let’s face it — going through security checkpoints is likely the most boring and one of our least favorite activities during Walt Disney World vacations.

WOW

From long lines to the annoyance of forgetting to remove an item before going through a bag check, security checks are a necessary, but annoying, hassle. Fortunately, we have some tips to help ease the security check process!

If you want to get through security quickly and with as little pain as possible, check out these SIX things you should do BEFORE going through Disney World Security.

Check (and double-check) Disney World’s prohibited items list

This seems straightforward enough and obvious, but enough people fail to check first what Disney won’t allow into their parks. Check for prohibited items, as some of the items may shock you. That’s right, leave your loose ice, Heelys, folding chairs, and selfie sticks at home.

Make sure you’re adhering to the Walt Disney World Resort Property Rules at all times and you’ll avoid easily avoidable problems that could result in your removal from the premises.

Practice Patience

So many people!

Disney World has some of the most visited theme parks IN THE WORLD (Magic Kingdom IS the most visited), so, knowing that, it’s fair to expect long lines doing pretty much anything — getting on attractions, eating food, riding transportation, and yes, getting through security. While we can’t alleviate these crowds, we can advise something that will make the wait more bearable — practice patience.

We know, we know, that’s asking a lot, especially if you have small children with you. That being said,  if you come to the parks with the expectation that you’ll be waiting in lines A LOT and accept that it’s okay — nay, necessary — to wait, you’ll find yourself less stressed. With any theme park experience, patience is key, especially at Disney World. More times than not, your trip won’t go exactly as planned but if you come to the parks with an air of patience we guarantee you’ll enjoy your day more than if you give into the frustration.

For those who simply cannot wait, we have noticed that if you wait out the morning rush and are satisfied to shrink your maximum potential hours at the parks by showing up later in the afternoon, you’ll be less likely to experience big crowds at a security checkpoint.

Organize and prepare your bags and strollers

Strollers in Hollywood Studios

Sometimes the worst part about security checks is watching that person a few people ahead of you fumbling around in their bags, slowing down the line. Or worse yet, something in your bag set the alarm off and now you have to go through a separate process where security has to scrounge around through your belongings.

Make life easier for yourself and for security by organizing your bags so that, if they are checked, you’re looking at an extra few seconds instead of minutes. To make life even simpler, try to use transparent bags as much as possible. For strollers, we’ve had different experiences going through security but the one constant is that if security has accessibility to all the compartments and can check through it quickly, the faster you’ll get into the parks. All in all, being organized almost always leads to a smoother process.

Remove items that will set off alarms BEFORE you go through detectors

Security Sign

We get it — it’s Florida and it rains a lot so it’s totally understandable that you’re bringing an umbrella to the parks. Know that it will definitely set off alarms. Have that out as well as anything metal. We have all experienced instances of the smallest metal objects setting off alarms, so if you don’t want to waste time being searched, have anything and everything that can possibly set off the alarms out and ready to go.

The sooner you have these necessary items out the better. No different than the last-second scramble through a TSA line, the more prepared you are to get through the line, the faster it will not only go for you but also for everyone behind you. So have those battery chargers and metal water bottles out and you’ll be through security in a flash!

Watch for other lanes to open

Lightning Lane

While Lightning Lanes don’t exist for security, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to bypass long lines. Depending on demand and day, security Cast Members may open up other lanes to speed up the checkpoint process. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when you’re waiting to get through security. Don’t be afraid to hop lanes if another one suddenly opens.

Don’t impede traffic

LONG line at the Transportation and Ticket Center

Finally, it goes without being said but we’ll say it anyway, do everything you can to keep foot traffic moving. That means don’t randomly stop, be sure to stay in a single file line, constantly follow security’s instructions, and adhere to everything we’ve gone over so far.

If you think making a scene will make getting through the line faster, we’re here to promise you it won’t. If you think you can “wing it” at the security lines and get into the parks within minutes, you’re in for a rude surprise. As long as you stay alert, do your best to not bunch up or slow the line, and stay as organized as possible, we assure you that you’ll give yourself the best chance at a forgettable (forgettable is very good in this instance) security wait.
