This Iconic Disneyland Ride is Closing Soon

One of Disneyland’s most iconic and beloved attractions is about to close for an extended period.

The Matterhorn Bobsleds quite literally changed the game for Disney rides when it opened in 1959. The coaster — the first made with a tubular steel track — along with the Submarine Voyage and the Monorail were such a quantum leap forward from everything else at Disneyland that they were granted a new category in the park’s then ticket books: They were E-Tickets. While that distinction technically ceased to exist when Disney changed to “all-in” tickets, it’s still used by many to describe the newest, fastest, and most technologically advanced theme park rides in the world, thanks in large part to the Matterhorn. The coaster continues to thrill Disneyland visitors to this day… except those visiting on certain days in the next few weeks.

Starting on April 15th, the Matterhorn will be entering an… interesting renovation cycle. The ride will close the 15th and reopen on April 19, 2024. After running as usual on the weekend of the 20th and 21st, the ride will then close again on April 22nd and remain closed until the 26th, before opening for the 27th and 28th. The cycle will then finish with the ride closing again from April 29th through May 2nd. After the attraction reopens on May 3rd, it’s scheduled for normal operation.

So, whats the story with that weird schedule? Well, if you break down a calendar, you’ll see that Disney is running seasonal maintenance on the Matterhorn from Monday through Thursday during the final three weeks of April, while having the popular ride open during the busier spring weekends.

The Matterhorn isn’t going to be closed for uninterrupted renovation coming up, but anyone unlucky enough to be visiting on a weekday between April 15th and May 2nd will unfortunately miss their chance at the iconic coaster.

  1. So part of the ride will be either updated or made safe but other parts won’t until the last maintenance is complete?

Either the maintenance is required or it isn’t. If it is, then why not close it until ALL of it is done, not just some of it?
