HOW to Ride Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway When it Opens in Disneyland

If you’ve been following Disneyland Resort news, then you probably know that there are some BIG changes happening in a classic land!

Mickey’s Toontown in Disneyland Park is currently under a massive renovation, getting new features, restaurants, play areas, and more. But perhaps the biggest addition is Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway — yes, the very same ride that’s in Hollywood Studios at Disney World! It’s opening later this month and now we’ve got more details about how guests can ride it.

The ride officially opens to the public on January 27th (which also happens to be the start of the Disney100 celebrations at Disneyland Resort!). But if you want to ride, you’ll need to join the virtual queue through the Disneyland app on the day of your visit.

The virtual queue will open first at 7AM and then again at 1PM, and there will be no standby line available.

You can also purchase an Individual Lightning Lane if you’d like to bypass the virtual queue wait. Pricing for this has not yet been revealed but we’ll be on the lookout for updates on that.

We’ve seen the virtual queue system used many times in the past for new rides at Disneyland and Disney World. When this ride opened at Hollywood Studios in 2020, it operated with a standby line, so we’re interested to see how the grand opening is different on the west coast.

We’ll keep you updated on the ride’s opening day with more details, and we’ll make sure to let you know how popular those virtual queues are — we recommend refreshing the app RIGHT at 7AM to make sure you get a spot if you’re visiting soon.

And there’s one other important thing to keep in mind with this ride — according to Scott Gustin, the ride will CLOSE during pyro (fireworks) in and it will reopen if the park closes at 11PM or later. Be sure to take that into consideration when making the plans for your day.

We can’t wait to share all the Disney 100th Anniversary celebrations from Disneyland later this month. It’s going to be a blast! Check back with us for all the latest updates.

  1. I’ll be back at Disneyland on March 8-9-10 and am excited to see the new Toon Town! I haven’t been to WDW to experience the Runaway Railway yet so that will be a first. I’ll be interested to see if they still have the virtual queue system then – it’s predicted to be relatively mild crowds and will have been open for more than a month. Counting down!
